The problem of thinning hair is one of the major concerns of people all over the country. Just by watching the myriad of hair restoration commercials that flood the television should give you some idea of the problem of thinning hair. More people today are examining hair restoration results from a replacement transplant that ever before. Tired of the non-medical treatments, hair restoration through a replacement transplant is quickly becoming a first consideration for thinning hair.
But just what is involved in a replacement transplant? Is it the most effective means of thinning hair restoration available? The American Council for Hair Loss, a non-profit organization that researches hair restoration techniques, offers the following information on replacement transplant surgery.
Things to Consider Before Choosing Replacement Transplant Surgery:
- Expectations. Some people are not candidates for surgical hair restoration because they lack a sufficient amount of donor hair. This donor hair is what is inserted in the thinning areas during a replacement transplant. In some cases, patients opt for a partial replacement transplant coupled with hair additions.
- Surgery Quality. When a hair replacement transplant goes wrong, it can get ugly. Many patients who are unhappy with the results of their replacement transplant surgery have no available options but a hair addition.
- Expense. Although fees for a full hair replacement transplant vary, they are usually quite high. But for patients with a disdain for their thinning hair, the expense is well worth it.
- The Procedure. In a hair replacement transplant, skin grafts are taken from a donor site somewhere on the body, looped, and then inserted into the thinning areas similar to an anchor.
There are also quite a few variations to the traditional hair replacement transplant that patients may consider when opting for a surgical solution to their thinning hair. Let's examine some of the more popular.
Replacement Transplant Variations:
- Flaps. The flap procedure transplants more hair at a time, and they are generally more involved than the traditional hair replacement transplant. This includes recovery time and expense. In this method, a much larger portion of the scalp is replaced with scalp containing donor hair.
- Scalp Reduction. With this hair replacement option, areas of the scalp that contain thinning hair are actually removed, and the elasticity of the scalp allows it to be pulled over the graft. This method is almost always combined with some other form of hair replacement transplant such as the flap.
- Scalp Expansion. This hair replacement procedure is performed when the scalp is too tight for a reduction. Expansion can also be performed to ready a patient for flap surgeries. As is the rule with this type of hair replacement procedure, it is more detailed than the traditional replacement transplant.
All of these hair replacement transplant options are viable choices for you in the battle versus thinning hair. Becoming thoroughly educated on your particular type of hair loss is the best way to ensure that you are making the right choice for yourself.
