Hair loss – also known as androgenic alopecia – affects some 60 million Americans, including 40 million men and 20 million women. In the case of male hair loss, male pattern balding is the most common type. The good news is: medical hair restoration is now widely accepted and approved.

Hair Restoration Options

Hair loss can be devastating in the cases of both men and women. Successful medical hair restoration is dependant on the underlying pathology, compliance, and patient suitability. Hair transplantation however is designed to be permanent and does not carry so many caveats.

Hair Loss Products

Hair loss treatments range from prescription only medications through to dubious concoctions offered in the small ads of magazines. Rogaine (minoxidil) is a topical application for balding and Propecia (finasteride) comes in tablet form. It is generally accepted that medical hair restoration treatments are more effective at reducing further hair loss; the earlier they are used in the androgenetic alopecia process. Rogaine is available over the counter however Propecia is still only available with a prescription. Propecia tablets should not be administered to pregnant women, so its use in female hair loss is limited.

Surgical Hair Loss Treatment

Should the patient be unsuitable for medical hair restoration or attempts at finding a hair loss remedy have proved fruitless, surgical hair loss treatments could be considered. The success of this baldness cure is not dependant on the initial cause. It can be used for a variety male hair loss complaints - the most common of which is male pattern baldness. Unlike a medical hair remedy, there are no barriers to treatment, unlike women's hair loss. Hair loss in a woman can be treated safely and effectively with hair transplantation.

Cost of Hair Restoration

Medical hair restoration requires the patient to use medication on a continual basis. Costs vary between $100 and $1000 a year. depending on concentration and brand. The longer the hair loss treatment is used, the higher the cost. Surgical hair transplantation costs are dependant on how many grafts a patient needs and might cost anywhere in the region of $2000 up to $10,000 plus accommodation and consultation costs.
